Learn how to make a traditional corn dolly using soaked husks which are layered, tied together and folded to create your own doll. These dolls were created at the end of harvest with the belief that they kept the spirit of the grain alive throughout the winter months until the following spring sowing season, when they were returned to the earth by burying or burning. Corn dolls varied greatly, from simple plaits of wheat or rye stems, to husk dolls, to large elaborate harvest trophies.
Tom Lewis aka Daddystreetfox is a Hackney based artist who in recent years has been discovering the endangered heritage craft of wheat weaving, straw art and corn doll making. He is greatly inspired by folklore traditions, urban wildlife, the pagan wheel of the year and in his art he uses materials that nature offers throughout the changing seasons.
