This workshop invites you to explore one of the most symbolically rich and nuanced tarot decks; the Marseille Tarot.

The Tarot de Marseille (TdM), a style that flourished in 18th-century France, has become an iconic symbol of mystery and magic, frequently gracing the screens in TV and films. In this workshop, led by the experienced tarot practitioner Paul Wood, we invite those intrigued by historical tarot to navigate the intricate illustrations of the Marseille.

Drawing inspiration from both modern and historical techniques, Paul Wood will guide you through a transformative experience. During the course of the evening, you will be instilled with the confidence to provide insightful readings using the Marseille Tarot.

Join us as we demystify the Marseille Tarot, empowering you to use it in your own spiritual journey.

Note: It will be helpful for attendees to have a Marseille Tarot deck during the session. Whilst Paul will bring in a selection of tarots to explore together, bringing your own deck will provide you a head-start in getting to know your deck and the way it differs with other Marseille Tarots. You can buy a Marseille Tarot deck through The Atlantis Bookshop which can be made available to collect before the workshop begins. Please contact us for more information.

Whilst the style could be considered as one of the most influential in Tarot’s 500+ year history, many tarot readers find the Tarot de Marseille a tarot that is hard to read.

Many readers have learnt to read with a Tarot deck which provides an illustration which symbolises it’s meaning, and thus struggle with reading the Marseille’s “non-pictorial pip cards” (the 56 minor arcana). Whilst many modern Tarot decks are embedded with occult symbolism and clues to the meaning of the card, the Marseille doesn’t provide Tarot readers with an ‘easy way in’.

However, learning how to read the Marseille can provide even an experienced reader with a new way to read Tarot that doesn’t require pre-set meanings and overt symbolism. This means that the Marseille can help readers listen to their intuition, accessing more creative and subconscious meanings to the 78 cards.

As such, Marseille Tarot decks benefit those that want to read more intuitively and make Tarot a more ‘playful’ experience.

Led by Paul Wood, this immersive experience begins with an introduction to the Marseille Tarot and exploring its historical roots. He will provide a glimpse into the fascinating variety of versions available in today’s market, and the unique nuances and differences they hold.

Paul Wood, an experienced tarot practitioner, will guide you through modern and historical techniques in interpreting the Marseille Tarot cards. He will also reintroduce techniques ‘lost to time’, breathing new life into this historical style of Tarot.

Paul will demystify the process of building a tarot reading, showcasing the power embedded in even the simplest techniques. He will also demonstrate some of his own techniques, helping you in the development your own unique style. Through active participation and exercises, you will build the confidence to embark on your own unique journey of exploration and interpretation.

Paul Wood is a Tarot reader with over 25 years of experience. He has been reading ever since he got his first Tarot Deck (the Mythic Deck) as a young teenager. He first learnt to read from his Mother, who had a life-long interest in the paranormal and spiritualism. Soon he was providing readings for friends one-to-one and at house parties.

His tarot journey began with reading in an intuitive style with The Mythic Deck (by Juliet Sharman-Burke). He has been lucky to learn Tarot with several different teachers over the years, all have been instrumental in shaping the reader he is today. His involvement in ceremonial orders and magic encouraged him to read the magical Rider-Waite-Smith and Thoth decks, learning to spot and decode the various layers of symbolism hidden in their designs.

In a desire to return to a more intuitive, and less intellectual, way of reading the tarot, Paul discovered the Marseille. He has devoted the last decade solely to reading Tarot de Marseille, having explored both modern and historical techniques. During his work with this tarot, he has developed an intuitive and playful style which he has taught both privately and online.
