The Rose is one of the most numinous and beloved symbols of spirituality in the western world. It speaks of both time and eternity, of the soul that embarks on the mystical quest, and the Divine Presence that it seeks. Author Mara Freeman will lead an exploration of this beautiful archetype through stories and slides, ranging from Egyptian Isis worship to 20th century poetry, by way of the classical Greeks, the medieval cult of Mary, Sufism, Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, and magical orders of the 19th century.

Mara Freeman, MA, has studied and taught Celtic and Western sacred traditions for over thirty years. Her first book, Kindling the Celtic Spirit (HarperCollins, 2001), was hailed as the finest modern introduction to Celtic spirituality and its relevance to us today. This was followed by Grail Alchemy (Inner Traditions, 2014), which has been called ‘a literary temenos of our time, a sacred space, in which to further explore one’s own inner journey’. The talk is based on her most recent book, Sacred Rose, which once again delivers timeless inspiration for the modern soul.
