In the artist’s own words:
“My artwork is a collection of 30-35 small-scale assemblages. These artworks are assemblages of found objects and are usually no bigger than 10” x 7”. This artwork has been a year in creation and accompanies my developments in cartomancy and psychic-mediumship. It is a record of my connection to Spirit. Within the collection individual artworks can be removed and new ones added but an identity remains. The found objects which make up the smaller works are mudlarking finds, metal-detecting finds, and flea-market finds.
Inspired by the classical elements model (earth, water, fire, air and ether), the nature and complexity of all matter can be explained in terms of simpler substances. Metal-detecting finds come from the earth. Mudlarking finds come from the water. World War II shrapnel came from the air and was often exposed to fire. Ether, the substance in space, is represented by a few small pieces of the Campo del Cielo meteorite.
The title of the work ‘A Shuffle of Many Things’ is a slight misquote of the philosopher Frances Bacon (1561-1626). It is used in connection with a cabinet of curiosities where disparate objects are placed together revealing unexpected connections and wonder.”
