We are once again breaking out the Pagan Carols and filling Museum Street with fun and laughter as we commemorate Saturnalia. The first Saturnalia was in 497BC when the Temple of Saturn in Rome was dedicated. It began as a farmers’ festival to mark the end of autumn planting. To give you a flavour of how we celebrate this occasion, the poet Catullus called it “the best of days” and while the cult statue of Saturn in the temple traditionally had woollen bonds tied around his feet, during Saturnalia these bonds were loosened to symbolize the god’s liberation.
So please do RSVP to confirm your place and turn up to join in the fun, sing some Pagan carols, eat, drink and be merry, and prepare yourself for the festive season in fine form.
