We are pleased to be currently presenting works from Sharon Seager in her exhibition at The Atlantis Bookshop entitled “Icons”.
The encounter with an icon is an encounter with the uncreated divine, given form through the particular saint or angel. When an icon is reverenced, kissed & bowed before, we bring our human body into active relationship to the particular facet of the Holy One. In the Orthodox Church, icons are on equal footing with the Liturgy of Communion & the Bible. An icon is the liturgy in colour & beauty. Its symbols are read as one reads a theological treatise. Their form is canonical, from a lineage of traditional, recognisable images that yet show evolution over the centuries, up to the present & to be continued by others…
Biography
When Sharon typed “painting for God,” into her computer’s search engine, a journey began that would lead her to dedicate her life to Icon painting. Her previous studies, work as a scenic painter in the theatre and practice in meditation, as well as the Jewish tradition of her birth; all combine to inform her current practice. Sharon’s chosen specialism is Russian Byzantine style Iconography. She is linked to the Prosopon School of Iconography, where she studies under a number of their notable faculty instructors.
