Gnosticism arose during the greatest flowering of spiritual and occult development in the West. This was in Alexandria, in the first and second centuries of the Common Era. Gnosticism flourished alongside Hermeticism and Neo-Platonism. These three did influence each other, but it was Gnosticism that had the greater magical impact. Why? Because the fundamental purpose of Gnosticism was: not to ‘believe’ – but to ‘know’ – not just ‘faith’ – but ‘direct experience’. And so ceremonial magic – communing with gods and angels – was the tool that the Gnostics used to have these experiences.
